The Suburb of Sydenham

 Our Aim:

 To investigate the impact of aircraft noise on the area of Sydenham.

Where is Sydenham?

Sydenham is located in the inner-west of Sydney. It is part of the local government area of Marrickville Council and surrounded by nearby suburbs of Marrickville and Tempe. Sydenham is located approximately 4.5km from Sydney Airport.

Overview: 

Being only 4.5km from the airport iteself, aircraft noise in Sydenham is a major issue, one that the majority of 1,021 locals are impacted with. The suburb is directly under the flight path of Sydney Airport. Research shows that aircraft noise is known to have adverse affects in many different factors in life. Political groups and local councils have already tried to reduce the impact and we want to find if it has been successful. We are interested as aircraft noise has a personal affect on our lives too and we are curious about extent of the issue and where it stands. We want to know how aircraft noise really affects Sydenham.

1) What are the social impacts of the aircraft noise in Sydenham? (E.g. effect on everyday life, annoyance and sleep disruption)

2) Does the aircraft noise have environmental impacts on air pollution in Sydenham?

3) During what times of the day does aircraft noise occur?

4) Does the aircraft noise contribute to health and medical diseases to the residents in Sydenham? (E.g. Blood pressure, heart disease, mental illness)

5) What are the possible strategies or actions that have/ may be taken to reduce the impact of aircraft noise in Sydenham.
