Survey
We surveyed a total of 30 people when we visited Sydenham. Unfortunately, only 18 were locals so our actual findings are based on a total of 18 people.
Below we have tabulated our results.
- Out of the 30 people we asked, 60% (18 people) lived in the area of Sydenham whilst 40% (12 people) did not.
- We wanted to know if aircraft noise has an effect on daily lives and how it affects the daily lifestyle.
- 83% (15 people) are affected by aircraft noise in their daily lives and 17% (3 people) were not. This is an overwhelming majority.
- We found that four main specified answers were sleep, (24%) personal communication, (37%) vocal effort, (22%) and leisure listening (17%).Several people ticked more than one box.
- We were curious if the environmental impacts were evident/visible and if they had a link to the aircraft noise
- Only 1 person felt that the quality of air is affected by the aircraft noise.
4. At what times of the day do you hear aircraft noise?
- We wanted to know if the aircraft noise occurred frequently during a time period or if it is spread out during the day.
- The numbers are somewhat balanced. (Check our tallies page for further investigation.)
- This question would help us to find a link between health issues and the aircraft noise disturbance.
- 16% (3 people) are suffering from a health issue and 84% (15 people) do not.
- Only 1 person from the 18 believed there is a possible link between aircraft noise and health problems.
- We wanted to know the locals point of view on this topic and to see if action is necessary, not the opinions of organisations such as the No Aircraft Noise Party.
- 6 people think action is necessary and 12 people do not.
Interesting facts
- An elderly lady said that the noise almost kills her when she takes her walk in the afternoon. When she hears people who think that aircraft noise is not a big issue, she says, "Well come to Sydenham."
-Restaurant owner who has lived in the area for 5 years says, "the aircraft noise makes people want to move."
-According to Census 2011, only 1,021 people live in Sydenham! There are only 443 private dwellings.
